Referrals

If you are referring an adult or child who has made a disclosure of, or there is a concern of, rape, sexual assault or abuse occurring 7 days ago or less, please call us on 0117 342 6999 immediately. We will be able to triage urgent medical and wellbeing needs, and advise on forensic options.

The Bridge supports people who have experienced rape, sexual assault, or sexual abuse, at any time in their lives. We are here, no matter what.

If you have been affected by rape, sexual assault or abuse, you can call us on 0117 342 6999 24/7, 365 days a year. Our telephone is answered by a specialist team of crisis workers, who are ready to take your call.

We also accept referrals from professionals. Our referral criteria and referral forms can be found on this page. If you have any difficulties completing the referral form, or sending the form to us, please call us on 0117 342 6999.

Once you have completed the referral form, please send the completed form to TheBridge@uhbw.nhs.uk. This email address meets the NHS Secure Email Standard (DCB1596) and is considered secure to send/receive emails from .gov.uk, .nhs.net, and .police.uk email addresses.

Our email address is monitored 08:00 – 18:00, Monday – Friday (excluding bank holidays), so it may mean that your email is not processed until the next working day. We do not routinely send receipt of referrals, please request this if required. We will endeavour to let you know if we have been unable to contact the person you have referred.

Referral criteria: Adults (18+)

Adults over the age of 18, who:

  • Have provided their consent for a referral to be made
  • Reside in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset or Somerset*
  • Have experienced rape, sexual assault, or sexual abuse, at any point in their life

*If an adult does not usually reside in an area we cover, but has been raped or sexually assaulted in one of these areas, they may attend The Bridge SARC for immediate forensic and medical care. We are able to refer them to their local SARC / follow-up services (depending on local availability), once they return back to their usual address.

What will happen when I refer an adult?

When you refer an adult to us, we will read the referral carefully to understand what support the client may need and how best we can support them.

We will usually make contact with the client via telephone*, using the contact details provided in the referral. We will explain we are calling from The Bridge and go through support options available to them. Our client care plans our tailored to the client’s individual needs and we will consider what health, emotional, psychological and practical support may be useful to the client at this time. We will make onward referrals where necessary.

We aim to make contact within two working days of receiving the referral**. We attempt to make contact with clients on three occasions. If we are unsuccessful on the third attempt then, where consent is given in the referral, we will will send an email or letter to let the client know we have tried to reach them and how they can get in contact with us. You can also re-refer at any time.

We will always check in with the client about how they are doing currently, and where consent is given we will send them self-help information, resources, and useful telephone numbers.

*Telephone calls from The Bridge will usually show as number withheld. Please let your client know this, so they can expect our call. If you tell us it is safe to leave a voicemail and we are unable to get through, we will leave the client a message telling them how to call us back.

**Please note this may be longer in times of exceptional demand (up to five working days). Please advise your client to contact us directly if they do not hear from us within five working days of you sending the referral.

If you are supporting an adult who has been raped or sexually assaulted 7 days ago or less, please call us on 0117 342 6999 immediately.

Referral criteria: Children and young people (Under 18)

Children and young people (0-17), who:

  • Reside in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Swindon or Wiltshire*

Where:

  • There has been a report of rape, sexual assault, or sexual abuse
  • OR there is no formal report but professionals working with the child or young person have concerns of rape, sexual assault or sexual abuse.

*If child or young person does not usually reside in an area we cover, but makes a disclosure of, or there is a concern of, rape, sexual assault, or abuse whilst in one of these areas, they may attend The Bridge SARC for immediate forensic and medical care. We are able to refer them to their local SARC / follow-up services (depending on local availability), once they return back to their usual address.

What will happen when I refer a child or young person?

We may speak to a young person directly, if the form indicates this and it is appropriate. We will explain we are calling from The Bridge and discuss the support options available to them. Our client care plans our tailored to the child’s individual needs and we will consider what health, emotional, psychological and practical support may be useful to the child at this time. We will make onward referrals where necessary.

Children living in Bath and North East Somerset, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire or Swindon who have reported non-recent abuse or for whom non-recent abuse is strongly suspected:

Some children from these areas may also be eligible for support and a non-recent assessment from the Avon River Clinic team. More information about this service can be found here.

Children who reside in Bristol, South Gloucestershire or North Somerset and require a non-recent assessment may be referred to the STAR Clinic instead. Please note, even when a STAR Clinic referral is required, children and young people living in Bristol, South Gloucestershire or North Somerset can still be referred to The Bridge for other care and support (referrals to therapeutic support etc.).

Avon River Clinic

The Bridge SARC also runs the Avon River Clinic, which supports children and young people aged 0 – 17 who have reported non-recent (8 or more days ago) sexual abuse, or for whom sexual abuse is strongly suspected.
